NORA Response to Relaxation of Licensing Hours for the Royal Wedding

Q1:
Do you agree that the order should apply to the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises?

While the majority of NORA members, who responded, accepted the proposal to permit relaxing the licensing hours for licensed premises, a significant minority objected.

Q2:
Do you agree that the order should apply to England and Wales?

While the majority of NORA members, who responded, accepted the proposal to permit relaxing the licensing hours for licensed premises, a significant minority objected.

Q3:
Do you agree that the order should extend licensing hours on Friday 18 May until 0100 the following morning?

While the majority of NORA members, who responded, accepted the proposal to permit relaxing the licensing hours for licensed premises, a significant minority objected.

Do you agree that the order should extend licensing hours on Saturday 19 May until 0100 the following morning?

While the majority of NORA members, who responded, accepted the proposal to permit relaxing the licensing hours for licensed premises, a significant minority objected.

If you disagree with this proposal, please give reasons.

The reasons given by the objectors included:
i. those resident in towns and cities where there are already problems of late night alcohol consumption object to its likely increase.
ii. the coincidence of a major football event is bound to increase the consumption anyway, so they fear a further increase
iii. the assumption that the later consumption of more alcohol is an appropriate response to the two events is deplorable
iv. an extension of hours for the sale of alcohol for one night might be tolerated but the proposal for two nights is unreasonable.
v. the majority of licensed premises already have extended hours and will provide sufficient opportunities for those wishing to drink at the late hour, so it seems unnecessary to extend the hours to the minority of venues without the extended hours.
